Short Courses

Research Evaluation and Performance Indicators
Susan Cozzens, Georgia Institute of Technology

This short course provides an introduction to the basics of evaluating research programs. Through a combination of lectures and student activities, participants will learn what an evaluation is, how to design one, the relationship between evaluation and performance measures, and the most common performance methods and measures used in research programs. They will also explore applications in several institutional contexts including universities, public laboratories, and funding agencies.

Tech Mining, VantagePoint, and Science Overlay Mapping
Alan Porter, Technology Policy and Assessment Center, Georgia Institute of Technology

This hands-on workshop will introduce the Tech Mining approach to profile R&D activity.  We will step through the process, including topic searches in S&T databases (e.g., Web of Science, Derwent Patents), data cleaning & analyses using VantagePoint software, and generation of science overlay & other maps using Pajek.  Four instructors will guide novices and share ideas with experienced analysts in suitable break-out and whole-group sessions. The course will include hands-on work on nanotechnology sample data.*

*The workshop is sponsored, in part, by the Center for Nanotechnology in Society at Arizona State University (CNS-ASU).  CNS-ASU research, education, and outreach activities are supported by the National Science Foundation under cooperative agreement #0151194.
